One of the largest summer events along the Danube takes place here, in Tutrakan, at the end of July. It is an experience you should not miss — just keep in mind that accommodation fills up quickly.
For several days the town nearly doubles in population, welcoming guests from all over the country and abroad. In the hot July evenings, when the sunset sets the river ablaze, the Danube Park and the quay fill with music, the aroma of grilled food, and excited visitors. The festival opens at the amphitheatre with a stunning river view and classical music under the open sky. Opera, ballet or chamber ensembles accompanied by ballroom dance set the tone, followed in the next days by folklore, pop and rock performances on the main stage.
The festival’s culmination arrives on the last Saturday of July, when multiple events unfold at once: competitions for the best fish soup and barbecue, symbolic Danube crossing, kayaking, amateur fishing, beam walking, and various children’s activities. Tastings, guest attractions, exhibitions at the local art gallery, family games and a lively waterfront street full of stalls add to the festive atmosphere.
The final festival evening begins with local performers and heats up with concerts by beloved Bulgarian and international rock musicians. As midnight approaches, the lights and music fall silent for a moment—before the night explodes into a spectacular fire-and-light show.
Everyone is welcome to join the competitions. Culinary masters invite you to taste their dishes, and those seeking more adventure can book a boat trip, fun photoshoots, guided walking tours of the old town or a ride on the festival train.
“Fiery Danube” is the festival that brings together everything Tutrakan can captivate you with — a unique atmosphere, beautiful nature, music, culinary traditions, sports spirit, entertainment, cultural experiences and impressive attractions.
