The Kuker Festival in the village of Varnentsi, held every March on Sirni Zagovezni, transforms the village square into a vibrant celebration of ancient ritual and living tradition. Organized by the local community centre, the event gathers groups from Northeastern Bulgaria and Romania who present traditional costumes and rites specific to the region.
Young and old join in the symbolic banishing of the harsh Danube winter, evil spirits and illness. The festival has a competitive character, making it even more dynamic. Dozens of groups compete in categories such as authentic ritual, blessing, ceremonial dance, most attractive performance and most impressive costumes.
Among the highlights are the local “black kukeri,” characteristic of Varnentsi. Dressed entirely in black and armed with wooden sabres and sticks, which they strike loudly, they often become the biggest attraction and command respect from the audience.
Another preserved local tradition is the ritual “Brazaya” from the neighbouring village of Belitsa, which is an integral part of the festival.
The collective drive to chase away winter and negative forces is accompanied by delicious food, warm drinks, folk music and a joyful communal spirit.
