On the first Sunday of September, near the Memorial Complex “Military Cemetery – 1916,” Tutrakan gathers to honor one of the decisive battles of the First World War. Here, where more than 8,000 soldiers fell, the silence carries more than history – it carries human fates, courage, and broken hopes.
The commemoration brings together generations, military units, descendants, and guests from across Bulgaria and abroad. Every year people come not only to remember the battle that ended with the capture of the Tutrakan fortress, but to feel the power of the words: “All who fell for freedom, wherever they may be, are our brothers – again by blood, only this time shed.”
The ceremonies are solemn yet deeply touching – wreaths, a moment of silence, footsteps upon soil that remembers.
This encounter with the past is more than tradition. It is a reminder of how fragile freedom is, and how high its price.
