The Danube – the vibrant artery of Europe – has long connected cultures, eras and peoples. Tutrakan is one of the places where history still shines in full force. Join us on a journey through time to uncover the secrets of the Roman Empire and the heritage it left along the Danube Limes.
Discover the Heritage of the Danube Limes
In the heart of Tutrakan lies the ancient Roman castellum Transmarisca, gradually revealed through archaeological excavations. History comes alive in the archaeological collection of the local Historical Museum, where Roman-era artefacts tell the story of life in the fortress.
Few know that many additional Roman forts once stood along today’s Ruse – Silistra region. Besides the well-known Sexaginta Prista (Ruse), Transmarisca (Tutrakan) and Durostorum (Silistra), important strongholds existed in the villages of Batin, Mechka, Nova Cherna and Malak Preslavets. Our route includes the hidden Roman treasures of Tutrakan and Malak Preslavets, as well as the legendary Roman road that once connected these fortresses.
